چکیده

Introduction. Schwannomas of the head and neck develop from the sheaths of cranial, peripheral or autonomic nerves. Between 25% and 45% of schwannomas occur in this region. Schwannomas of the sympathetic chain are very rare, and the literature describes just over 40 cases, localised mostly in the neck or retroperitoneal areas. Case report. We present the case of a 38 year-old woman with a large schwannoma of the cervical sympathetic chain. At its widest, the tumour reached a maximum diameter of 130 mm. Since the mediastinal component was so large, the tumour was operatively excised via a right posterolateral thoracotomy. Microscopic analysis confirmed the diagnosis of benign schwannoma. A computed tomography scan six months after resection showed no evidence of local recurrence. Conclusion. Schwannomas of the cervical sympathetic chain are extremely rare tumours. Proper diagnosis requires microscopic tumour tissue analysis. Although these tumours are benign, they can cause a variety of symptoms while growing, necessitating urgent operative treatment.

An unusual giant schwannoma of cervical sympathetic chain: a case report

BACKGROUND Schwannomas are benign, well-differentiated tumors that originate from Schwann cells. Involvement of the cervical sympathetic nerve is relatively rare. Computed tomography is indispensable for the diagnosis. The treatment is surgical. Histological examination confirms the diagnosis. Horner's syndrome postoperatively is supportive of the diagnosis. The rarity of giant cervical sympath...

Cervical sympathetic schwannoma simulating a thyroid nodule.

Schwannomas are rare tumours arising from peripheral nerve linings. A case of a schwannoma arising from cervical sympathetic chain is presented. The clinical presentation was that of a right solitary thyroid nodule. Intra-operatively, a 3 x 3 cm encapsulated lesion was seen arising posterior to the vagas nerve and attached to the cervical sympathetic trunk. The lesion was excised together with ...

Ancient schwannoma of the cervical sympathetic chain : a case report.

Schwannoma of the cervical sympathetic chain is an extremely rare nerve tumour. We report an unusual swelling in a 41-year-old female who presented with an asymptomatic solitary mass in the right parapharyngeal space. Clinical examination and computed tomography showed displaced carotid artery in an antero-medial direction. Surgical excision of the lesion was carried out and histological examin...

Horner's syndrome from giant schwannoma of the cervical sympathetic chain: case report.

OBJECTIVES Nerve sheath tumours are uncommon lesions in adults. Schwannomas originating from the cervical sympathetic chain are a rare subgroup of nerve sheath tumours. Moreover, the existence of Horner's Syndrome before surgery is uncommon, with only five cases reported in the literature. Here we review the presentation, imaging characteristics, and operative considerations of a patient with a...

Ancient schwannoma of the cervical sympathetic chain

Ancient schwannomas exhibit characteristic histological features. Fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is of limited use. Radiological evidence demonstrating displacement of blood vessels may aid diagnosis of schwannoma. Malignant transformation of ancient schwannoma has been reported. Surgical excision carries a high risk of postoperative Horner's syndrome.
